When most people think of Iowa agriculture, seafood probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But Midland Co., a land-based shrimp farm, is changing that perception—bringing innovation, sustainability and premium seafood to the heart of the Midwest.
Founded by Jackson Kimle, Midland Co. has been operating for eight years with a mission to create a more responsible and sustainable approach to shrimp farming. Jackson brought a background in land-based aquaculture and a clear vision: traditional shrimp systems were often large, complex and expensive, with inefficient waste treatment. His solution? Mimic nature by using algae to treat wastewater an
d rebalance the system. Years of research and development led to Midland’s patented Algae-Based Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS™), allowing shrimp to thrive in clean, controlled environments.
Midland Co. is more than just a shrimp producer. Based in Iowa, the company designs, fabricates, and installs turnkey shrimp production systems at independently owned farms throughout the Midwest. They partner with farmers from system design to harvest, providing market access and sales support to ensure a premium product from tank to table.

Sarah Kimle, Jackson’s wife and Midland Co.’s operations and communications manager, explains, “Our focus is on quality, consistency and transparency. We want our customers to know exactly where their shrimp comes from and the care that goes into raising it.”
The farm produces Pacific white shrimp, prized for their clean, robust flavor and lobster-like richness. Customers often find them perfect for both special occasions and weeknight meals, with head-on shrimp offering an extra punch of flavor for chefs and seafood enthusiasts.
What excites Midland Co. most about Iowa agriculture is the chance to help farmers diversify their operations, introduce younger generations to innovative farming and build a resilient food system in the Midwest. In 2026, the company plans to expand from three farms to four additional locations, continuing to scale while staying true to their mission of sustainability and community connection.
Choosing Iowa, says Sarah, is about more than supporting local products, it’s about being part of a forward-thinking agricultural community. “What excites us most about Choose Iowa is the opportunity to connect with our local community, collaborate with other farmers and celebrate the innovation happening in Iowa agriculture,” she shares.
For anyone curious about trying something new, Midland Co.’s shrimp is a must. Raised sustainably in Iowa, it offers premium flavor, unmatched quality and a story that connects you to the farmers and innovators behind your food.
